About Alegrant
Behind the Advice
Alegrant exists because international trade has become unnecessarily difficult to navigate.
We are customs law specialists by training, but advisers by instinct. Our work sits at the intersection of regulation, operations, and decision-making where clarity matters more than volume of information.
This page is not about what we sell.
It is about how we think, how we work, and what clients can expect from us over time.

Why Alegrant Was Built

Alegrant was founded by global trade and customs compliance professionals who had worked inside complex regulatory systems in customs authorities, law firms, and large advisory organisations.
We saw the same issues repeatedly:
- Good businesses making poor decisions due to unclear advice.
- Technical answers disconnected from operational reality.
- Fragmented guidance across countries.
- Clients paying for volume, not judgement.
Alegrant was built to do things differently:
- Fewer words, more clarity.
- Fewer handovers, more continuity.
- Less noise, better decisions.
How We Think About Customs

We do not see customs as paperwork or compliance in isolation. Customs decisions affect:
- Supply chains.
- Pricing and margins.
- Contractual risk.
- Reputational exposure.
- Growth timelines.
That is why we approach every question with three filters:
- Is it compliant?
- Is it workable in practice?
- Is it appropriate for the client’s stage of growth?
If an answer only satisfies one of these, it is not good enough.
How We Work Day to Day

Behind the scenes, our work is deliberately structured.
- Every engagement has a clearly accountable adviser.
- Advice is reviewed for accuracy and clarity before delivery.
- Positions are documented to ensure consistency over time.
- We cite legal sources and rulings, not opinions.
- We challenge assumptions including our own.
Clients experience this as calm, clear guidance.
What they do not see is the discipline that makes it possible.
Independence, Confidentiality, and Judgment

We are independent by design.
- We do not sell software.
- We do not receive referral fees.
- We do not promote solutions that serve us more than the client.
Confidentiality is treated as a professional obligation, not a marketing constraint. We do not publicise client names or engagements unless explicitly authorised.
When necessary, we will say:
- “This approach increases risk.”
- “This may be legally defensible but operationally fragile.”
- “This saves cost now but creates exposure later.”
Clients do not always like these answers immediately.
They value them over time.
Our People

Alegrant’s advisers are not generalists.
They are practitioners with deep experience in customs and trade law, drawn from:
- Customs authorities.
- International law firms.
- Big 4 advisory.
- In-house trade and compliance roles.
They are locally based in the jurisdictions they advise on, but work within a shared Alegrant framework so advice remains consistent across borders.
Technical strength is a baseline.
Judgement, clarity, and restraint are what we select for.
Technology, Used Carefully

We use technology and AI to support research, comparison, and regulatory monitoring.
We do not automate judgement.
Every conclusion is reviewed by a specialist who understands:
- The law
- The operational reality
- The commercial implications
If something cannot be explained clearly, it is not ready to be acted on.
Alegrant’s Values

Clarity and Simplicity
We make customs expertise accessible and actionable. We do not overcomplicate issues or hide behind technical language. Our role is to remove unnecessary complexity, explain trade-offs clearly, and enable informed, confident decision-making.
Confidentiality and Discretion
Confidentiality is non-negotiable. We handle sensitive information with the highest level of care and discretion. We do not disclose client names, brands, or logos, and we do not use client engagements for publicity.
Integrity and Ethics
We act with independence and integrity in all our work. We do not automatically adopt a client’s position if it compromises compliance, ethics, or long-term sustainability. When necessary, we provide a dissenting view in the client’s best interest.
Professional Standing
We operate within the limits of our expertise and maintain strict professional discipline. We do not create dependency, and we actively identify and avoid conflicts of interest. Where appropriate, we collaborate with other specialists to ensure clients receive the best possible advice.
Human First. Technology Second.
We use technology and AI to accelerate research and data handling, not to replace judgement. Every opinion, review, and recommendation is delivered by experienced specialists who take the time to understand your operations, challenge assumptions, and adapt advice to your business reality.
Diversity and Inclusion
We value diversity in all its forms. Diverse perspectives and experiences strengthen our judgement and the quality of our advice. We foster an inclusive environment where differences are respected and expressed constructively.
What Clients Tend to Notice

Clients often tell us the same things, unprompted:
- “You explain things in a way we can actually use.”
- “You remember our context.”
- “You say when something doesn’t make sense.”
Those comments matter more to us than awards.
“As SMS Oilfield grew in size and geographically, we required policies and procedures to export our products and services to minimise the risks of trading internationally. Alegrant came in and provided tailored consultancy and training to our whole management team from business development to finance and logistics. This advice was tailored to the particular challenges our company faces in the oil industry. The policy and procedures developed are embedded in our management system and have proved invaluable as we have grown into three regions.“
SMS Oilfield, a Scottish specialist SME providing sensing technology, data analysis and visualisation for the global oil and gas community with now regional hubs in Kuala Lumpur and Abu Dhabi as well as ongoing operations in West Africa and the Middle East.
”HebHomes Limited is a successful and growing Scottish based self-build kit house company. We currently source some of our key supplies from the rest of the EU and are also embarking on an overseas expansion with new sales to the rest of Europe. With no experience of international trade, the prospect of Brexit and its implication on our business has been intimidating and we expected a major hit on our existing business and a reduction in overseas sales. Catherine at Alegrant has de-mystified international trade and the implications of Brexit. Providing customised information to our business and clear guidance we have been able to minimise the impact of Brexit and any tariffs applicable. We are now confident to take forward our internationalisation with all its commercial benefits. “
Jean Hamilton, Director HebHomes Limited
“We were very impressed with the Brexit Customs Training Course we received. The course was designed specifically for our business needs and all our questions were answered. We feel confident we are in compliance with HMRC regulations while trading with the EU post Brexit.”
James MacSween, Customs & Shipping Supervisor, MacArtney Underwater Technology
”While we focus on delivering the world’s first ‘underground drone’ to grain storage operators and help them Saving Grains, we like to avoid unnecessary bureaucratic complexity putting a stall on our operations, and the Alegrant expert, through a single session, was able to help us understand how to navigate the customs duties landscape during this transition period through very clear language and advice.”
Dr Lorenzo Conti, Founder & Managing Director of Crover
“They are the friendliest jurists I’ve ever met! Having someone respond with enthusiasm, empathy, and determination when it feels like the sky is falling—that was a completely new experience for me!”
